I am commenting towards the District 17, which you should have it balanced. Respect the community of interest which should be balanced. Why separate in 3 pieces and have them in one piece.
Oscar Chapa
While this map is better than before, we urge you to unify communities of interest further. By law, communities of color should be respected and kept together. Another concern of mine is the low number of people of color in Detroit districts. Representation matters. The bare minimum is not enough.
Nancy Bliss
Some districts appear noncompetitive. Don't stretch or sway districts.
Spencer Gold
I feel as though many of the proposed districts in this area would not see any competitive races - they are heavily partisan. Politicians not needing to worry about their elections causes too much apathy from both the elected official and the community they represent. I would want districts to be created that would make for competitive elections where they would have to respond to the citizens.
Judith S Goodman
Districts 8, 9 and 14 are heavily Democratic. Meanwhile Districts 16 and 18 are safely Republican. One of the purposes of creating the Independent Redistricting Committee was to create competitive districts so that elected officials would need to be responsive to voters. Creating safe districts does not do that. These 5 Districts need to be revised to make them competitive.

Oakland Charter Township has very little in common with Troy. Please swap Oakland Charter township with out of this district and reeplace it with Madison Heights which is closer to Troy community as a COI. Thanks for all your work.
Bonnie VanKeersbilck
Please look again at Senate districts 8, 9, 14, 16 and 18. These need to be more fairly drawn so one political party is not favored over the other party. Citizens need a representative who listens to them. If the district is safely drawn the rep doesn't have to work with the other party and will only listen to some of their constituents. This has not been good for our country.
Lauren B Lisi
This district as well as 8 and 9 are heavily Democratic, while other Districts, like 16 and 18 are safely Republican. This will mean that representatives in these districts will not be as likely to listen to their voters as they might be if the districts were more fairly split between republican and democratic voters. Please redo these Districts so that they are more competitive. Fairness and representatives who are responsive to their constituents is ultimate goal.

Please keep Novi together! Novi extends up to 14 Mile and this proposal is separating my community from the rest of the city and putting us in an entirely different county of Washtenaw. This makes no sense! You are grouping a heavily populated area into a rural area where we have little in common. Traditionally we have worked closely with Walled Lake, South Lyon, and Northville and would like to continue to do so.
Merlin Steffes
Grand Rapids, Kentwood, and East Grand Rapids have the perfect population to create a State Senate District, 265,000 people. Why are you splitting Grand Rapids?
Julie A Argonis
as with the state district map, this senate district separates Novi from similarly minded neighbors like Farmington, Farmington Hills, in favor of rural communities like Salem and Superior Township - little in common with 696/96 growth corridor. It also crosses three country lines, linking Wayne, Oakland and Washtenaw which seems as excessive and unnecessary as splitting plymouth and canton, and farmington and farmington hills. This district is not balanced, is not connecting communities of interest and is miss-matched all the way around

Dozens of public commenters requested a Jackson-Washtenaw district, not sure why you included Calhoun and Hillsdale but split the non-AA/Ypsi part of Washtenaw. I could see including Albion with Jackson, but even so, Albion is more connected to Battle Creek.
Conner
You should keep Hillsdale County whole in District 26, this would allow you to draw a true Jackson-Washtenaw district as requested by dozens of public commenters.
Conner
Dozens of public commenters requested a Jackson-Washtenaw district, so it's a good start! But I'm not sure why you included Calhoun and Hillsdale but split the non-AA/Ypsi part of Washtenaw.
Conner
Pittsfield Township belongs with western Washtenaw in district 29 -- dozens of public commenters requested a Jackson-Washtenaw district, not sure why you included Calhoun and Hillsdale but split the non-AA/Ypsi part of Washtenaw.
Conner
Saline belongs with western Washtenaw in district 29 -- dozens of public commenters requested a Jackson-Washtenaw district, not sure why you included Calhoun and Hillsdale but split the non-AA/Ypsi part of Washtenaw.
Conner
Scio Township belongs with western Washtenaw in district 29 -- dozens of public commenters requested a Jackson-Washtenaw district, not sure why you included Calhoun and Hillsdale but split the non-AA/Ypsi part of Washtenaw.

Partisan fairness expert, Lisa Handley, election law expert, Ruth Greenwood, and Voters Not Politicians executive, Nancy Wang, have all stated that, to comply with the Voting Rights Act standards and criteria, the MICRC can and should create competitively fair and balanced legislative maps while respecting communities of interest. To instill the trust and respect of Michigan voters in this process, it must be the top priority of the MICRC.
Samuel Lair
The three northern townships of Hillsdale County, Moscow, Scipio, and Somerset Township should be included in SD 26 with the rest of the county. Not doing so would split apart multiple school districts and separate many prominent members of the greater Hillsdale community from the rest of the county.

Districts 8, 9 and 14 are heavily Democratic. Districts 16 and 18 are safely Republican. The Independent Redistricting Committee was to create competitive districts so that elected officials would need to be responsive to voters. They were not supposed to create safe ditricts!. These 5 Districts need be redrawn so that they are competitive districts.
Mary Murphy
I am concerned that the maps are now following the goals of the Proposal 3 and the Independent Commission to draw equal representation of communities, and competitive races in each Senate District- I feel the maps do not meet the goals of Proposal 2 nor the goals of Independent Commission.
Wendy Appleton
I believe making my district (13) part Oakland County and part Wayne County is not good because the needs and interests of both are different. Also I believe we need districts with equal amounts of Democrats and Repulicans which would make the districts fairer and more competitive. I am sure this can be done and I believe that is why we are having the redistricting.
Mary Murphy
Thank you for your participation in the Independent Commission but I feel Oakland County should be separate from Detroit. I believe in working together within cities and counties but the issues in Detroit may be different than the issues in South East Oakland County. Keep Detroit together so people and communities can work together. Keep Oakland county together again so communities can work together. I
Diane Luscombe
Thank you for keeping Rochester Hills with Troy in a Senate district. This will help ensure fair representation. However, please continue to review and revise districts 16 & 18 to keep them competitive to serve ALL the people.
Deborah P Passmore
I support including Midland with the other Great Lakes Bay area cities of Bay City and Saginaw, since there are so may economic and employment opportunities and challenges we share. I am concerned that Sanford is excluded from this district. I realize that the western part of Midland county is more rural, but the Tittabawassee watershed area ties us together and requires support due to the potential impact downstream to Midland, Saginaw and Bay City. Also our Midland county school districts benefit from common legislative representation
Sharon Baseman
The Oakland County part of District 13 looks good, but putting part of Detroit into that district, among other Oakland County districts doesn’t make sense, Detroit districts should be all Detroit and the Oakland County districts should be all Oakland County. Mixing these counties dilutes the priorities of the communities in these districts.
Lisa Ross
In general, I'm pleased with the effort. The districts appear to give more representation to the Metro Detroit area which has a large population and represents the diversity of our state's population.
Lisa Ross
Please ensure Districts 8, 9, 14, 16 and 18 are competitive. It's important to have partisan fairness in the Metro Detroit area where most of the state's population is.
Judy Ann Robinson
Please make District 14 competitive. As it is, it is a Democratic district.
William Asher
One of the six constitutional criteria provided to the redistricting commission by voters in 2018 was partisan fairness. Partisan fairness is the *only* way we will end up with legislative bodies that accurately reflect the will of the people, rather than the gerrymandered mess that we have now. Numerous districts in Oakland County skew heavily toward one party or the other (8, 9, and 14 skew Democratic and 16 and 18 are Republican). Please revise these five districts so they are competitive.
Phil Forner
Please keep Allendale Township in the Ottawa County District and not grouped together with significantly larger Walker/Rockford area in Kent County. These areas are different and will cause the smaller Allendale Township to be under represented.
Sonja Marie Patrick
If you're going to take half of Calhoun County and Batty County and part of Ionia County with pieces here and there of other counties, that's when it starts looking gerrymandered. Our current Senate District is all of Calhoun, all of Barry, and all of Ionia. 3 perfect county squares that are very similar to one another in 1 Senate District.
